By Nicole Sifuentes, for CBC News

I'm still unpacking after spending five days in Edmonton for the Canadian Track and Field Championships. In my suitcase are two gold medals — I won my first and second national championships in the same weekend!

Several times in the past, I went to the national championships with the fastest time of the year, but never won. But despite a lot of disappointment over the years, I never stopped preparing for the next race.

For me, there are three main aspects in preparing for races: training, tapering, and mental preparation.

Training is the most obvious way to prepare — the weeks, months and years of physical work leading up to competition. This was the topic of my last blog, which you can read here if you missed it.

"The money's in the bank" is a pretty common expression in the running world and it refers to tapering — the process of resting up before a big race when the hard work is done.

While athletes vary in their approach to tapering, everyone can agree that it is crucial to get the best out of yourself in competition. If I've been training intensely leading up to a race, my legs will be tired before I even start. Normally the goal is to train as hard — and smart — as possible without over-training or getting injured. But leading up to an important competition, I run less and feel good about it.

Finally, there's the mental side of competition. Physical training is obvious, but often it seems that mental training is considered optional. Many athletes (myself included) have spent years training their bodies without training their minds for competition.

In the past, I neglected mental training and it kept me from reaching some of the potential that I earned from physical training. I had to begin training my mind to help get more out of my body. Part of that is visualizing a successful race ahead of time.

As a young athlete, I was taught to imagine myself running with strength, pushing myself to the limit, and sprinting to the finish.

Visualization is a valuable skill that has helped me greatly over the course of my career. I find that it's a lot easier to overcome fatigue and discomfort during a race when I have decided beforehand that I will be tough.

For a long time, visualization was the only way I addressed the mental aspect of racing, but over the past two years I've embraced disciplined mental training with the help of a sport psychologist.

I've learned that I am generally hard on myself and constantly striving to improve. That sounds great, but it is important to balance that attitude with recognition of and appreciation for the things I do well. I now make a conscious decision to stop thinking about what "needs improvement" and instead focus on my successes. Specific to racing, I make a conscious decision to stop thinking about possible outcomes and instead focus on my race plan.

Thinking purposefully has significantly impacted my life — in fact, it's the inspiration of my personal blog on nicolesifuentes.com.

In short, mental training has helped me manage nerves and emotions, and gain confidence as an athlete.

Between months and years of training, perfecting the taper, and honing a winning mindset, so much is invested behind the scenes of race day. Races are the purpose for my preparation and they are opportunities to showcase everything I've been working on.

The best thing about the investment is when it pays off when you want it most. As the 2015 Canadian 5000m and 1500m Champion, I say that with certainty!
Although I have never met you, I do feel that I know each of you very well and have in many ways been on the GAC journey with you. I have observed your academic and personal development from afar throughout this academic year. I have read all of the assessments that come into our shared Dropbox folder and watched with great pleasure your role plays, oral presentations and seminars. Now I do have to admit one guilty pleasure – I always look forward to moderating assessments from AlphaMax Academy as they always demonstrate confidence and a willingness to examine complex and difficult issues. This can only come from a supportive educational environment that encourages all those involved to push the envelope. Through your written and spoken work I have been privileged to be participant – in a small way – in preparing you for a life in a new and changing world. I am confident that you will all make great contributions in the coming years. It has also been a great pleasure to continue learning about Suriname and I look forward to visiting in person!

I would also like to applaud you because now you are part of a large global family of high-achievers who can proudly claim, “I survived the GAC!” and as you know from experience, this is a well-earned achievement and not for the faint at heart! I am sure that there were times you thought you would never get to this day! You have worked your way through the sometimes seemingly endless expectations of the GAC and are now ready for the next stage of your life. You can be sure that all the academic and social skills that you have developed over the course of this academic year in the GAC have prepared you for a successful future in whatever course you choose to follow. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said; “The things taught in schools and colleges are not an education, but the means of education.” It is my hope that GAC has provided you with the building blocks that will foster your ongoing growth and development as you move through life’s journey.

As you embark on this new journey I would ask that you keep three things in your mind and heart:

First of all, NEVER lose faith in yourself and what you can do. Follow your heart and your intuition. Let them lead you towards to person you really want to become and help you achieve everything you really want to achieve. Believe in yourself and follow your heart! As Steve Jobs once said: Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart, and intuition

Secondly, don’t ever compromise your basic values – do only what you truly believe is the right thing to do. Even if everyone else is doing something else, trust in yourself and the values you have been taught by your parents, your community, your school and your teachers. Define your values – commit to your values. As Time Cook, CEO of Apple said: “Your values matter. They are your North Star. You don’t have to choose between doing good and doing well. It’s a false choice, today more than ever. Your challenge is to find work that pays the rent, puts food on the table, and lets you do what is right and good and just. Find your North Star. Let it guide you in life and work and in your life’s work.”

And finally please remember to dream! After all, as Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

And so to each of you in this graduating class of 2015 – Congratulations and Good Luck!

And many congratulations to your wonderful teachers who have guided and nurtured you through this stage of your education with a great deal of care and dedication.

Congratulations and best wishes to all of you!

For the last two months, we have been counting down to this day. Now we are finally here feeling both excited and nervous. We are finally at the end of this stage of our lives. We are ready for the next stage.

There are times where I think that I was destined to come and study at the academy. It was my mother who convinced me to come to this school. In my first days I felt unsure of my English speaking and writing skills. I was not a fluent speaker. I had to work on my grammar and writing every day in school. It was difficult and not exciting.

Last year I was invited to enter the GAC class, but I personally I did not feel up to the task. Both Mr. Taylor and Mr. Drepaul, however, convinced me that I would do well on the GAC course. And here I am today, valedictorian, speaking on behalf of the GAC class and the Graduating class of 2015. The GAC course has made me and my group confident to face the next level of academic work and to face society and its challenges.

Today I would like to thank all our teachers, parents and family members for supporting and believing in us. To all the teachers who watched and helped us grow, I know we all have caused lots of headaches and maybe even heartaches. I want to thank you all for not giving up on us and for continuing to believe in us.

Mr. Drepaul who is the head of the GAC class did not only teach us but he did also guided and prepared us for our further studies. He likes to sit and talk about life for hours. Many of us were not thrilled by these talks.

There were many times where we did not want to hand in our assignments just because we were lazy. But Mr.Drepaul still stayed with us, so thank you Mr. Drepaul for all your patience and for everything you have done for us. You were always there for us! Thank you!

Mr. Taylor, I really do not know where to start with you! The first year when I came here I was so scared of you. I don’t even know why! When I am at school I think about Mr. Taylor, when I do homework and assignments I think about Mr. Taylor, even at night when I sleep I dream about Mr. Taylor! His name, his voice is engraved in my head.

It is really hard to express my thoughts when it comes to Mr. Taylor! But, after getting to know him better, I realized that he could also as sweet as chocolate! So right now, I am not scared of Mr. Taylor anymore! And guess what, he is my favorite teacher now! He taught us all the important aspects of life. He tried to prepare us for our upcoming battles in college. I’m pretty sure most of the parents know that Mr. Taylor likes to teach overtime. But please understand that it is because he just wants to teach us as much as he can!

So Mr. Taylor, on behalf of the class of 2015 I would like to thank you for your time, effort, and love. You are not only a great principal but also a great teacher!

Class of 2015, we had a great year! There were bad times and there were good times! We struggled together and we were always there to support each other! Good or bad, I will never forget the experience and memories I’ve had with all of you. Now that we have come to an end we will all have go our own way. It will be difficult for all of us to reunite again after this separation but our memories with each other will stay forever! I am really happy and I really appreciate getting to know each one of you! I love you all and I will really miss you guys! I wish you all the best after this!

Once again, the class of 2015 wants to thank all our teachers and family members! We thank all who have made this wonderful evening possible. We sincerely thank you all from the bottom of our heart!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8940227559808055853.post-8793102398854193992015-06-26T11:59:00.001-03:002015-06-26T11:59:28.206-03:00The GAC program at AlphaMax AcademyMy name is Chayenne Crystal Flohr. During this year, I got the opportunity to participate in the Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) program which is a preparation program for college and university. I am thankful, blessed, and have no regrets taking this great opportunity.
The Global Assessment Certificate program prepares each student for college and university. It provides students from mostly non-English-speaking backgrounds with the knowledge and skills to prepare them for tertiary education. The GAC is accredited in Australia by ACT Education Solutions Ltd.

All our the tests and assignments were moderated there. For all subjects assignments and tests need to be done. Then, the tests and assignments will be corrected by a teacher, and then sent to Australia for moderation.

The GAC consists of three levels. Level 1 has six subjects – Academic English 1, Mathematics, Computing, Study Skills, Communication Skills. Level 2 has Academic English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Business and Social Science.

Students are allowed to choose whether they want to do Social Science or Mathematics in level 2 and Level 3.
Lever 3 has Academic English, Business, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Computing.

The GAC class of 2014-2015
This year, eight students have participated in the GAC course of 2015 – Michelle Chow, Angelique Doorson, Chayenne Flohr, Jamiel Habieb, Joy Jones, Daniel Kolf, Alain Soekhlal & Tianshu Zhang. During this last year, the eight of us became so close with each other. We became one big team, including our instructor, Mr. Milton Drepaul, and our other teachers like Mr. Leroy Marshall, Mr. Emile Krak, Mrs. Sharon Hoppie and Mr. Sean Taylor.

In order to complete this course, we needed to do several tests and assignments for each level. The assignments consisted of PowerPoint presentations, research papers and reports. For a science research report, we went on an environmental field trip to the Anton De Kom University of Suriname. To complete the other assignments, we needed to do a lot of research online.

I think, at some point, we underestimated this course. The reason why is that we thought it was not difficult. It was a lot of work, because a lot of research was needed to do the reports. A research process does not last an hour, but several days or even weeks. This was the point where most of us struggled a lot. One problem we all had was procrastination.

I want to advise all the future GAC students to take this course seriously. Don’t put things off. For example, if you have got an assignment to do belief start today. Don’t start a day before the due day. Stay dedicated, focused and positive. There is a time for fun, and a time for seriousness. If it is time to be serious, be serious! Be open-minded, and do not fear to learn. You all can do it. Have belief in yourself and your actions. Don’t look at others, but start by yourself. You all are the leaders of tomorrow!
Students and staff did school assembly around the bust. The school's anthem prayer " Where the head is held high " - a poem from Tagore's Gitangali was said. Two hymns were sung then the bust was garlanded by Ambassador of India in Suriname Ms. Subrashini, Senior teachers, Members of ICC and the youngest students in the school.

Mr. Taylor, Mr. Drepaul, Mr. Kraak, other teachers, staff and students.
A very good morning to all of you.
Once again I am happy to be here to celebrate Rabindranath Tagore’s 154th birth anniversary in the esteemed institution of Alpha Max Academy.

We all know Tagore as a great poet, playwright and educationist. Tagore’s belief in scientific knowledge and his concept of humanism which transcended nationalism and patriotism into universal brotherhood makes him a visionary who anticipated the global village in which we live today.

His thoughts on these issues are of great relevance even today and I quote “ to accept the truth of our own age it will be necessary to establish a new education on the basis, not of nationalism but of a wider relationship of humanity”.

He believed that education should be comprehensive to teach us different aspects of life including the mundane and the spiritual. As a visionary his views on environment and women’s rights make him relevant to our existence today. Strong sense of aesthetics, freedom and dignity of human beings were some of the themes of his works.
Tagore saw the world as a vast give-and-take of ideas and innovations. He insisted that “whatever we understand and enjoy in human products instantly becomes ours, wherever they might have their origin.” He went on to proclaim, “I am proud of my humanity when I can acknowledge the poets and artists of other countries as my own. Let me feel with unalloyed gladness that all the great glories of man are mine.” The importance of such ideas has not diminished in the divisive world in which we now live.
My name is Alain Soekhlal, I am 18 year of age, and I am a recent graduate from the AlphaMax Academy. My dream is to become a famous architect, and I hope that Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) can lead me there.
Two years ago, I visited SCAD in Georgia, and I was fascinated with the school. I immediately knew that this was the place I wanted to be. The school is filled with people from all across the globe. In addition, it is a very quiet place.

SCAD

At the time I was there, I gathered all the information I needed to know about how to apply, the various costs - housing fees, and meal plans. A year ago, I started to apply online. There were a number of different fields that were required for acceptance. I needed a certain amount of money that would support me throughout the course years, I needed a score of 6.5 or higher in the IELTS test, and I needed to fill out a series of different sheets with my information about myself.

Approximately two months ago, I did the IELTS test, and got a score of 7. I immediately sent my scores to the admissions office where Mrs. Ana Velez was responsible for my work. I frequently emailed her with different questions and her requests for information. After I sent my scores, Mrs. Velez had them checked.

On May 19, 2015, I received an email from Mrs. Velez stating that I was accepted to SCAD. I was overwhelmed with joy. I was now another step closer to my dreams. I then waited a few days for my i20 to arrive. The i20 is a form that the school sends for the students to take to the American embassy when applying for a student visa.

After I received the files, I had to report to the American embassy to request a student visa. My request was approved. On August 24, 2015, I will go to SCAD in Georgia and start my journey of becoming a well known Architect.
There also was an English Spelling Bee contest for schools in which Dutch is the medium of instruction.

In a separate round in this year's contest students had to give the meaning of English words.

“By going bigger, we want to realize a long-term goal, which is participating in the foreign Spelling Bee”, says Ms. Monique Brown, director of Stichting Leren voor een goede toekomst (Foundation of Learning for a good future). (Quote from article in de Ware Tijd Daily 20 April, 2015.)

One of the goals of the organization is promoting English language education in schools. She said that she was surprised that the children were so good.

This year AlphaMax Academy was the only participant in the category of schools in which English is the medium of instruction. Other English Language schools did not participate for a variety of reasons.

Since AlphaMax was the only school contestant, AlphaMax students had to compete with each other. The overall winner was Archana Mangal. In second place was Joanna Daher and Sheetal Anroedh came third . They got prizes; Archana Mangal got a trophy to keep and a laptop.

Archana Mangal said: “I not only wanted to participate but to broaden my knowledge, I also wanted to prove myself. And it is very important to be able to communicate in the English language.”

The students were prepared by AlphaMax Academy English instructors Kawita Thani, Sharon Hoppie, Simone Griffith and Cheryylyn Cambridge .

Carinlangs students -Kawita Thani,Vishal Ramjiawan and Gina Persaud were members of the jury AlphaMax put a lot of effort into preparing its students and helping to to organize the contest.

AlphaMax, and Archana, Joanna, Sheetal in particular, Congratulations!
Chinese New Year is the most important time of the year for all Chinese around the world. In Suriname this is no exception. Each year three Chinese associations, Kong Ngie Tong Sang, Chung Fa Foei Kong and Fa Tjauw Foei Song, usually organize their own Chinese New Year celebration. 2015 was the first year where all three associations gathered and celebrated this special day together.

There are some traditions that Chinese cultures observe during New Year. The red envelope, also known as Hongbao, is money wrapped in red paper given to kids from their parents, grandparents and others as New Year gifts.

A Red envelope is used because the color red symbols energy, happiness and good luck. Sending red packets is a channel for sending good wishes and luck. The significant thing is the red envelope and not the money inside it. In Chinese tradition it is impolite to open the envelope in front of the giver.

The dragon dance is another tradition that Chinese observe during New Year. This dance is done to scare away evil spirits. The Chinese culture thinks of dragons as helpful, friendly creatures which are linked to good luck, long life and wisdom. Chinese Dragons are associated with storm clouds and life-giving rain. So, they have special powers to fly in the air, swim in the sea and walk on land.

This celebration lasts a few days and it is an important time for families to meet and have delicious meals together. Our celebration in Suriname links us to Chinese across the world. It is also an important way in which we let the other ethnic groups in Suriname society know about our culture. We try to attract all the energies needed for success at Chinese New Year.
When I came to this school in 2014 I found Assembly unusual because in my last school we didn't have Assembly.

I was told that the purpose of Assembly at Alphamax was to get the students together, so that they could focus their thoughts and feelings on positive ideals. The school wanted students to concentrate on the purpose of schoolwork and to approach the day's activities in a organized fashion.

Every morning in Alphamax Academy all students gather in the Assembly hall. Assembly begins at 7:15 am and usually takes about 15 minutes. We begin with two prayers. Then we sing a hymn, say an Affirmation and also sing another hymn. The Affirmation that we say at Assembly is also said at the end of our school day.

Sometimes the director of the deputy director speaks to us about something important, or some topic to inspire us. He also makes announcements. On Mondays and Fridays, we also sing the national anthem before Assembly is dismissed. At Christmas time we sing Christmas songs instead of the usual hymns.

Being at Assembly has helped me to appreciate the importance of silence, the value of singing and the power of affirmations.

Researchers at Imperial College London who conducted the review said on Monday that wider use of e-learning might help make up for a global shortfall of 7.2 million health workers identified in a recent WHO report.

Josip Car, who led the study, said that the use of electronic media and devices in education - already used by many universities and workplaces to allow "distance learning" to support campus- or office-based teaching - could enable greater access to education, especially in poorer countries where the need for health professionals is greatest.

He said the barriers were mostly in access to computers and Internet connections.

Car's team carried out a systematic review of 108 existing studies to assess the effectiveness of e-learning for undergraduate health professional education.

They also conducted separate analyses looking at online learning, requiring an internet connection, and offline learning, delivered using CD-ROMs or USB sticks, for example.

They found that students gain knowledge and skills through online and offline eLearning as well as or better than they do through traditional teaching.

When I was 21 years-old, a gentleman asked me what I thought the value of an hour was. I honestly did not know how to answer the question. He went on to teach me one of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned.

He suggested that the value of an hour was priceless. This confused me some, so this is what he said to me.

“If you invest one hour each day in understanding yourself and your environment better, you will accumulate nine 40-hour weeks over the course of a year!”

Yikes! As you can imagine I was blown away when he put it to me that way.

Nine 40-hour weeks? This seemed impossible until I did the math. 365 days, times one hour each is…yup, nine 40-hour weeks!

He went on to ask me how good I could get at something if I did it all day, every day for just over 2 months. Well, you already know the answer to that.

I thought I could be awesome!

He went on to tell me that over the course of just five years, I would have invested the equivalent of 1,825 hours of focus on whatever I desired to accomplish my life.

Imagine for a minute, how good you can become at anything that you did one hour a day for the next year. How fit could you get? How much more in love would you get and give? How much more money could you earn?

Let me suggest that one hour is a small price to pay in comparison to the payoff. Just one hour a day may be the razor’s edge you need to really get the results you want in your life.

For me, the decision was easy. I have been studying human potential and the mind for over 20 years. Each time I think I’m getting a good handle on it, I am gently reminded of how much there is to observe and learn.

Is getting what you want worth an hour a day? I certainly hope so.

I still manage to set aside my hour to read motivational stories or listen to inspirational people. They are the fuel for my mind and it keeps me learning and yearning for more.

Please adopt an hour a day for yourself! Pick one area of your life that you want to improve and commit the next 90 days to that one thing.

I assure you that the results you achieve will be well worth the decision! And remember…you can’t take out of life more than you put in.
