Xiomara and Tariq win first events at their US College

 

Xiomara and Tariq Getrouw have continued to demonstrate their athletic skills in the US by winning their first races at Monroe Community College where they are now studying, 

Last Saturday, September 21 Xiomara won the 7th edition of the MCC 5 km race. She was the best female runner.

Tariq was the best MCC male runner.

Xiomara commented: "It was a very cold and rainy day. The temperature here in the U.S. is very different from Suriname. During the race, my  team (Resident Life) supported me strongly." 

Tariq said: "This was a very good experience for me. The event ended with a dinner and award ceremony. "

Tariq and Xiomara started school in the first week of September.Xiomara is in the Liberal Arts program. She is taking six courses this semester : Spanish, German, English, Biology Lab,and Social Studies. She is enjoying her courses so far and is happy to be doing languages.At AlphaMax she had often stated that her dream was to study at least four languages.

Tariq is in the Fine Arts program. Both students graduated from AlphaMax Academy in June.

Renzo Tjon-A-Joe in the final of the World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai

Renzo Tjon-A-Joe reached the final of the World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai. He finished eighth in the 50 meter freestyle.

Renzo clocked around 23 seconds in the finals. The previous day he had set a Surinamese national record of 22.75 seconds.

His coach Zabdai Zamuel was extremely happy with his performance.

Australian Luke Percy became world champion in 22.14 seconds. The silver went to the Russian Evgeny Sedoc (22.19) and the bronze to the American Caeleb Dressel (22.22)

Renzo Tjon A Joe is Suriname’s leading swimmer in the50m and 100m. freestyle. He is a student of AlphaMax Academy and is a member of the Oasis swim team. He has represented Suriname internationally many times.

AlphaMax's Carifesta event on 20th August 2013

Dennis Tauwnaar (Pikin Sranan) has done a video report  of the second day of AlphaMax's Carifesta event. The video is 28 minutes long and is posted on You Tube. Dennis talked to all the participants in the event and has captured many interesting moments.

A. Murugesan holds exhibition at AlphaMax for Carifesta

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, Murugesan says that drawing was a passion  from his early schooldays. Driven by this passion, he completed a course in drawing through correspondence  from a well known school in Chennai .

 During his working life he had opportunities to visit and experience life in different countries thanks to his wife's diplomatic career.

Murugesan was deeply impressed by the Dutch school of painting while in Holland . There he joined the Art School in Koorenhuis, Centre for Art and Culture, in The Hague. After completing the basic art course where he  had fun learning all the mediums,he eventually moved to watercolours and learnt the medium for a year. Since then he has continued painting, in  many countries.

Starting with Holland, Murugesan's paintings capture landscapes from Zambia, Ukraine, India, Great Britain, Germany and now Suriname!

Murugesan has previously exhibited in: Lusaka, Zambia (2002) and Kiev, Ukraine (2006). London 2009, 2010 and Hamburg 2011.

The artist's vision of his work is expressed in these words : 'The freshness and immediacy of watercolours, their translucency and vibrancy always attracted me, Though difficult to master, watercolour kindles my passion and throws a challenge every time I approach the paper with paint. I hope you enjoy the paintings as much I enjoyed painting them!
