Celebrating Tagore 150 Years On:ALPHAMAX STUDENTS PAY HOMAGE TO INDIA’S POET LAUREATE

2010-05-19 18:48:58 - On Sunday, May 16th, 25 students of the AlphaMax Academy, Suriname, did a multimedia presentation, “Many Faces of Love”, in which an entire segment was devoted to excerpts from India’s Poet Laureate Sir Rabindranath Tagore’s most famous work, Gitanjali.

The one-hour concert was a combination of a serious and light-hearted look at the different aspects of human love. Using the Greek model of ‘philia’, ‘eros’, and ‘agape’, Academy students performed drama sequences, dances, songs, and video presentations.

All three dance presentations were choreographed by artistically-gifted Mathoerie Jagmohan, Surinamese- born veteran Indian Dance Teacher, who has mastered the Bharat-Natyam dance-style from south India.

The entire ‘agape’ panel of the presentation was based on a literary work of Paramahansa Yogananda, and selections drawn from Sir Edwin Arnold’s translation of the Bhagavad Gita, “The Song Celestial”.

Joining many friends, parents and theater-goers in attendance at the Sunday evening event were Ambassador of India to Suriname, His Excellency K.J.S. Sodhi, Director of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) Suriname, Sunil Bhalla, Indian Embassy First Secretary, Arun Sharma, and members of the AlphaMax Academy Board of Directors, including Chairman Eugene Noordpool.

The ‘Many Faces of Love’ was well-received by the packed audience that gathered at the Patronaat theatre hall in Paramaribo, Suriname.
